Resources for Those Impacted by Hurricane Helene

Cardinal Care is here to support Virginians impacted by Hurricane Helene and to make sure that all members can access the care they need.

I was dislocated, how will I continue to get my Medicaid notices?

You can update your address by calling Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282 or your local Department of Social Services. Even if you are planning on returning home or do not have a permanent address, you can give us a mailing address, like a P.O. box or the address of a friend or family member, for a temporary period. Mail from the Commonwealth may not forward, so please update your address with us even if you have already requested to forward your mail through the U.S. Postal Service.

Can I keep my Virginia Medicaid if I temporarily leave the state?

Yes, you can keep your Virginia Medicaid if you leave Virginia but plan on coming back once your housing situation stabilizes.

How can I apply or submit a renewal form or additional information if I lost my paperwork?

Applications, renewals, and changes can be completed over the phone with Cover Virginia or online at commonhelp.virginia.gov. Cover Virginia can also check the status of your case, tell you if additional information is needed, and/or send replacement forms to the address on file.

If you have been asked to provide more information to confirm your eligibility, such as paystubs or bank account records, but cannot get the documents for reasons outside of your control, call Cover Virginia or contact your local Department of Social Services. We can extend the deadline and help you find the information that is needed. It is important that you contact us as soon as possible so your coverage is not ended because we did not  receive the requested information by the deadline and did not know that you were impacted by the storm.

Can I continue to go to the doctor and get prescriptions if I lost my Medicaid card?

Yes, you can still access all your Medicaid benefits, even if you don’t have a Medicaid card. Providers can confirm your Medicaid enrollment using their systems or by calling the Medicaid Provider Helpline at 1-800-552-8627. You can also call Cover Virginia and ask for your Medicaid Member ID to give to your doctor or pharmacist.

How can I get a new Medicaid and/or Medicaid health plan card?

Call Cover Virginia or contact your local Department of Social Services to have a new Medicaid card mailed to you.

Call your Medicaid health plan if you need a new health plan card. The Cardinal Care Managed Care enrollment broker can tell you which health plan you have and your plan's contact information.

Can Medicaid help me get to my doctor’s appointment if I lost my vehicle?

Yes, Medicaid covers emergency and non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) for members enrolled in full-benefit coverage. NEMT reservations can be made through your Medicaid health plan or, if you are not enrolled in a health plan, through the DMAS fee-for-service (FFE) transportation helpline. Health plan transportation helpline numbers are on the back of the health plan card. Health plan and FFS transportation helpline numbers are also available here.

How can I find a new doctor if my current doctor’s office was impacted by the storm and closed?

Medicaid health plans and their care coordinators can help members find a new provider. Please call the plan directly, especially if you have an urgent need. All health plans and the Cardinal Care Managed Care app and website also have online provider search tools.

Members in FFS Medicaid can call the Medicaid FFS Helpline, 1-804-786-6145, or use the online provider portal at vamedicaid.vaxix.net/Search to find a new provider.
