Virginia's Insurance Marketplace

Open Enrollment for Virginia's Insurance Marketplace

If you do not qualify for Medicaid or FAMIS, you may be able to get health insurance through the Virginia Insurance Marketplace. The Virginia Insurance Marketplace was created for Virginians, by Virginians, and is the only place to get financial assistance to help lower the cost of coverage and care.

Unlike Medicaid and FAMIS that have year-round enrollment, most Virginians who enroll in health coverage through the Marketplace need to sign up during Open Enrollment, which is November 1 to January 15 each year. If they do not sign up during Open Enrollment, they must qualify for a Special Enrollment Period or wait for the next Open Enrollment. Special Enrollment Periods are given when some experiences a change in circumstances such as:

  • Losing other coverage, including Medicaid or FAMIS
  • Moving
  • Getting married, divorces or having a child

Virginians can learn more about the Marketplace and enroll in a plan at marketplace.virginia.gov or find local help on the Find help in your area page
